1、recluse n.隐居者、隐士
Long before his days as the world's most famous recluse, Howard Hughes flew planes fast and far.
在成为世界上最有名的隐士之前，霍华德·休斯 (Howard Hughes)早已有了丰富的飞行经历。
2、quell v.克服、消除、减轻
The White House has tried to quell anxieties about the danger of Ebola spreading in the United States.
白宫已试图全力消除埃博拉病毒在美国传播的危险给民众带来的焦虑。
3、pristine adj. 纯洁的、干净的、完全未受污染的
Now the house is in pristine condition.
现在，这所房子一尘不染。
4、recuperate v.恢复体力和能量; 复原
例句1：
Sleep is the time when your body recuperates and rebuilds from the day's stress.
睡眠是让你的身体从白天的压力中调整并重新恢复体力和能量的时段。
例句2：How long did it take you to recuperate completely from your operation?

5、replenish v. 用....填满；补充
例句1：
They bring in dredged sand to replensh the beach.

6、repugnant adj. 令人厌恶的
例句：
The truth is that we need only look at recent human history to findreal, live, utterly repugnant evil.

restitution n. 因损失或受伤支付的补偿金，赔偿金
While restitution is paid to the victim, criminal fines and felony assessments are paid to a crime victims’ fund.

7、sabotage
v.破坏、捣乱、阻碍正常运作
例句1：
We want at least a district that won't sabotage the dreams of its youths.
我们至少要有一个地区不会阻碍当地年轻人去追求梦想。
例句2：
The bombing was a spectacular act of sabotage.
这场轰炸是一次大规模的蓄意破坏行为。
8、precipice n.悬崖、峭壁、绝境、险境
例句1：

例句2：
A slight carelessness on this precipice could cost a man his life.

记忆方法：
前缀:
pre-：表示“在....前面的，预先”
prepare准备,prehistory史前，prescribe开处方
词根：
cipice=head，表示“头”
precipice=pre前面是头cipice→悬崖
precipitous=pre前+cipit头+ous……的→precipice的形容词，“陡峭的、险峻的”，也有“急躁的、鲁莽的”意思
9、potential
adj.潜在的、有可能的；n.可能性、潜力、潜能
例句1（做形容词）：
What potential global threats should policymakers pay more attention to?
政策制定者应该注意哪些潜在的全球威胁？
例句2（做名词）：
My father is very keen that I shall fulfill my potential.
我父亲特别希望我能够发挥出自身的潜力。
10、plenteous adj.充足的、富饶的、丰富的
The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.
收成真是太好了，产量很高，但是劳动力太少。
11、pertinent adj. 与某事有切题的、逻辑性的关联
例句：
You write about things that feel pertinent and urgent to you, and that varies depending on what stage of life you are going through.
你写的东西是令你觉得息息相关并且迫切的，这些东西会随着你人生所处的不同阶段而不断变化。
我们常见的relevant，也是“相关的”意思。它与pertinent的区别在于，relevant 指任意关联、具有相关性即可。
12、persistent adj.固执的坚持、持久的
It says,"together, if we face obstacles and counter the negative with a persistent positive, we might just change the world." -Seattle Times
西雅图时报说：“如果我们能够共同面对障碍、用持续积极地态度反击负面情绪，我们也许就会改变世界。”
persist v.坚持
例句：Most people in this company persist in setting strict demands on themselves.
persistency n.固执
例句：He was nettled by her persistency.
